Highbankers

By: Dan Hodgins

Highbankers are a type of powered sluice box used by recreational placer miners to extract gold from sands and gravels. Highbankers that recreational placer miners use are typically between 6-14 inches wide and anywhere from 24 inches (2 feet) to 72 inches (6 feet) in length. Highbanking is the act of mining for gold using a highbanker, a type of power sluice that uses a gas-powered or electric-powered pump to wash gravels in a sluice box to separate gold from lighter minerals.
